What is a Doula

A doula is a woman, trained in childbirth that supports other women during labor.¬†As a doula I help to assure a safe and satisfying birth experience for the family.Recent studies have shown that the presence of a doula during labor results in a more comfortable labor, and greater maternal satisfaction with the birth process.I have received training through the Seattle Midwifery’s doula training program and am in the process of becoming certified by the Pacific Association for Labor Support (PALS) and by Doulas of North America (DONA). I have been attending women in labor for over two years, and I also teach childbirth preparation and parenting classes at a local hospital. I draw on my knowledge and experience to provide emotional support, information and physical comfort to you during the labor process. I can provide reassurance and perspective to the laboring mother and her partner, make suggestions for labor progress, and help with relaxation, massage, positioning and other comfort techniques. I am independent and self-employed. As your doula, I work for you, not your care provider or hospital.
